It's easy to assume a cat sleeping 16 hours a day is perfectly content. But indoor cats, in particular, can get genuinely bored — and a bored cat usually finds its own entertainment in ways you'd rather it didn't. Here's how to spot it and what to do.
Do cats really get bored?
Yes. Cats are hunters wired to stalk, chase, climb and explore. Indoor life keeps them safe but removes most of those outlets, and without replacements that mental energy has to go somewhere. Boredom in cats often looks like ‘bad behaviour’ — when really it's an unmet need.
8 signs of a bored cat
- Over-grooming — licking one patch until it thins (also worth a vet check).
- Over-eating or begging for food out of habit rather than hunger.
- Night-time zoomies — tearing around at 3am because the day held nothing.
- Scratching furniture and knocking things off surfaces for a reaction.
- Attention-seeking — pestering, vocalising, or sitting on whatever you're using.
- Aggressive or over-the-top play, biting hands and ankles.
- Lethargy and low mood — sleeping even more than usual and seeming flat.
- Staring out of the window for long stretches with nothing else to do.
Sudden changes in any of these can also signal a health issue, so if something appears quickly or seems off, check with your vet first.
How to fix a bored cat
- Play with purpose. Two short wand-toy sessions a day that end in a ‘catch’ satisfy the hunting instinct and burn energy.
- Add a self-play option. A motion- or touch-activated interactive toy keeps a solo cat engaged while you're out.
- Make them work for food. A puzzle feeder or a snuffle mat turns meals into foraging.
- Give them height and hiding. Shelves, a cat tree and a tunnel or cosy cave add territory and places to ambush.
- Rotate toys weekly so ‘old’ toys feel new again.
- Create a window perch — live ‘cat TV’ is surprisingly absorbing.
You don't need everything at once — a little daily play, one foraging meal and somewhere to climb transforms most cats. Our 12 indoor cat enrichment ideas go further, and the cat range has the tunnels, toys and feeders to get started.
