When the clocks go back and the pavements turn cold and dark, walks get shorter and both dogs and cats spend more time indoors. That’s a recipe for restlessness — unless you top up their days with indoor enrichment. Here’s how to keep pets happy, busy and calm through the winter.
For dogs: replace lost walk-time with brain-time
- Foraging meals. Tip dinner into a snuffle mat so a two-minute meal becomes ten minutes of nose-work.
- Puzzle feeders and stuffed chews. A frozen, stuffed toy is a brilliant, long-lasting rainy-afternoon activity.
- Indoor games. Hide-and-seek, ‘find it’, a hallway fetch, or a cushion obstacle course burn energy without a soggy walk.
- Short sniffy walks still count. Even ten damp minutes of free sniffing does a lot — quality over distance.
For cats: fight the winter slump
- Structured play. Two short wand sessions a day keep an indoor cat’s hunting instinct satisfied when the garden’s off-limits.
- Self-play toys. A motion toy keeps things moving while you’re at work in the dark months.
- New textures and scents. A fresh cardboard box, a sprinkle of catnip, or a rotated toy keeps curiosity alive.
Lean into cosy
Winter is also the season pets most appreciate a warm, secure place to sleep. A self-warming calming bed in a draught-free corner gives both cats and dogs somewhere snug to retreat — which is half of good enrichment: knowing when to wind down.
Keep it fresh
The secret to winter isn’t one big activity — it’s variety. Rotate a handful of games and toys through the week so nothing goes stale, and mix busy time with proper rest. Our Calm & Busy Kits bundle a ready-made rotation for exactly this.
A little indoor enrichment turns the long dark months from restless to cosy — for them and for you.
