From October the evenings close in fast, and a lot of dog walks now happen in the dark — before work, after work, or both. A dog you can barely see is a dog a driver cannot see either, and it only takes one quiet lane for that to matter. A light-up collar is the cheapest bit of peace of mind you can buy.
Reflective vs light-up — what is the difference?
A reflective strip only works when something shines a light at it, so it helps with headlights but does nothing in a dark field. A light-up collar glows on its own, so you can see your dog across a park and so can everyone else, headlights or not. For winter, that is the one you want.
What to look for
Three things: rechargeable (batteries you have to keep replacing get forgotten), adjustable so it sits right on your dog's neck, and a steady and flashing mode — flashing catches a driver's eye, steady is calmer for a relaxed wander.
Our Nylon LED Light-Up Collar ticks all three and starts at £12.99 — about the price of a round of coffees, for something you will use every dark evening until spring.
A note on nervous dogs
If your dog finds dark walks genuinely stressful — pulling, freezing, or refusing to go — being more visible helps you, but the anxiety itself is worth raising with your vet or a qualified behaviourist. Calm handling and a predictable route do more than any gadget.
