What to Put on a Lick Mat: 15 Safe Ideas for Dogs & Cats

A lick mat is only as good as what you spread on it. The right topping turns it into a calming ritual for bath time, fireworks, vet trips or bedtime. Here are fifteen safe ideas, plus the foods to keep well away.

15 safe lick mat toppings

For dogs:

  1. Plain, unsweetened natural yoghurt
  2. Dog-safe peanut butter (xylitol-free — always check the label)
  3. Wet dog food or your dog's usual food, softened
  4. Mashed banana
  5. Pure pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  6. A little mashed sweet potato
  7. Bone broth (no onion or garlic), thickened or frozen
  8. Mashed blueberries or a little unsweetened apple sauce

For cats:

  1. Wet cat food, smoothed out
  2. A spoon of tuna or salmon in spring water (mashed)
  3. A lick-e-lix style cat treat paste
  4. Plain cooked, flaked white fish
  5. A little unseasoned cooked chicken, blended smooth
  6. Cat-safe plain yoghurt (in small amounts)
  7. Their usual food thinned with a little water

Foods to avoid

Never use anything containing xylitol (a sweetener in many peanut butters), chocolate, grapes or raisins, onion or garlic, or lots of salt — these are toxic to pets. Go easy on very fatty or sugary foods, and remember cats are far less tolerant of dairy than dogs. If your pet has allergies or a sensitive stomach, stick to a topping made from their normal food.

Tips for the best results

  • Freeze it. A frozen lick mat lasts far longer and is brilliant for teething pups or hot days.
  • Count the calories. Treat toppings as part of the daily food allowance so meals stay balanced.
  • Clean after each use. A quick rinse keeps the mat hygienic; most are top-rack dishwasher safe.
  • Use it with a purpose. Bring it out for baths, nail trims, car journeys, fireworks or the evening wind-down — the licking is what soothes.
